Digital Storytelling

Digital Storytelling
by
Renke Samusch, Dominik Baumecker and Moritz Zockler
Web 2.0 im Fremdsprachenunterricht

Renke, Dominik and Moritz, who are all teacher trainees, have written a very interesting and detailed article which explores the use of comic and video creation software for teaching storytelling in a motivating and engaging way.

In the article, they mention, in particular, Bitstrips, xtranormal, pixton and strip generator but they also provide a link to Alan Levines wiki resource, acknolowdging that many more comic and video creation tools exis.

Renke, Dominik and Moritz believe that students become more engaged in writing process when they realise that they can use these tools to bring their own stories alive by adding a visual element through pictures and video. Being able to use the tools provides a great way of encouraging student creativity. The choice of images/characters and how they are put together is limited only by the student's imagination.

Also, the student's final production can then form the basis of a verbal presentation to the rest of the class, which helps in practicing and developing spoken language skills. Obvioulsy this can also lead to great opportunities for team work where groups of students are tasked with producing their story and presentation.

As a bonus, Renke, Dominik and Moritz point out that organisational skills and multimedia skills are also learnt during the process, even though they are not the main focus of the task.

Renke, Dominik and Moritz feel that younger students may need more support in using such tools and that, in such cases, it "is crucial" that their teachers are competent in using the tools before introducing the exercise. This is often not the case for older students where they are very quick to pick up new programs and may even teach their teachers a thing or two!

As well as students creating work, teachers can also prepare stories in advance thus controlling "the quality of the language" to be used. This can be good for practicing reading skills while still allowing students to add their own creativity to the final visualization. However, Renke, Dominik and Moritz warn that the topic should be chosen carefully so that it will inspire students to produce their comic/video.

Teacher prepared comics/videos could also be used as the initial prompt for creative writing, maybe based around the current vocabulary that is being studied. The students use this work as the basis for their story and presentation. Renke, Dominik and Moritz believe this is a great way for promoting story telling and can be used with all age groups. Through these tasks, students are introduced to the idea of building plots and using dialogue appropriately. Encouraging students to role play their final presentations is another way of engaging and motivating the students in the writing process.

Renke, Dominik and Moritz also provide great examples of where these tools can be used for more than just storyteling such as for learning:
  • grammar
  • vocabulary
  • cultural studies
  • history etc
Having explored the many differnent ways in which these tools can be used, Renke, Dominik and Moritz conclude by pointing out the main considerations to be taken into account when deciding to use them:
  • time constraints - for learning and using the tools
  • overusing the tools - trying to use all the features
  • overexposure to the tools - reducing student motivation
I like thte way Renke, Dominik and Moritz have concentrated, throughout their article, on the pedagogical aspects of using such tools rather than simply exploring the tools themselves! A comprehensive and inspiring read with lots of practical examples to try out and experiment with.

700+ Great Teaching Videos

Khan Academy have over 700 videos "covering everything from basic arithmetic and algebra to differential equations, physics, and finance". Hosted on Youtube so they will, unfortunately, be blocked on many school networks!

The videos are produced in a conversational style with Salman Khan using ordinary Microsoft Paint to replicate an 'old-style' blackboard. They are very easy to follow and seem to be limited to around 10 minutes so great for 'bite' sized learning.

Many thanks to Zaid for this one!

Downloading .SWF Files

Real Player 11 allows you to download videos from the Internet quite easily but for some reason the download manager kept 'hanging' when I, recently, tried to download a .swf file.

Turns out there is another easy way to download files from the Internet using Firefox. Have a look at the video below if you have not used this method before. Worked perfectly first time!!!

I guess this is yet another reason to make the switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox.

Impressive Collection of How-To Videos

WonderHowTo

WonderHowTo "hand-selects and curates the best instructional videos from over 1,700 websites" currently providing over 150,000 free how-to videos.

The videos are grouped into 35 different categories with the Education section containing over 1000 videos, the Computers & Programming providing over 3000, the Software section listing over 6000 and the Language section containing over 5000.

You can search WonderHowTo either by browsing the categories & subcategories or by entering a keyword. You can also sort the results provided by latest & greatest, grade, length, view count, submitter or date.

There doesn't seem to be any obviously inappropriate content, although I'm not sure about the Alcohol, Gambling and Weapons categories. As with any of these sharing sites you need to be on the lookout!

Broadcast Live with Ustream.tv

Ustream.TV

Ustream.TV is a live interactive video broadcast platform that enables anyone with a camera and an Internet connection to broadcast to a world wide audience of unlimited size. Simply create your own channel on Ustream or broadcast through your own site.

With Ustream's interactive broadcast functionality, your viewers can personally interact directly with you and each other through a built in chat facility.

Your broadcast is recorded and available for viewing at a later time, which is great if someone misses the live event. However, the most appealing thing, for me, is that you can catch the broadcast live and participate via the chat if you choose.

Ustream is another tool that has great potential for use in education. There are already many teachers taking advantage of this technology. Here's a great example of a broadcast that I viewed last week - an informative and very useful presentation on using Google Apps in the classroom.

Produced and delivered by Kevin Jarrett. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Downloading Videos with RealPlayer

RealPlayer11Downloading videos from the web couldn't be easier with RealPlayer11.

The NEW RealPlayer gives you "the power to download Internet video instantly" by simply grabbing videos from Web sites with just one click.

The downloaded videos are automatically saved to the RealPlayer11 library so that you can easily watch them whenever you want.

RealPlayer 11As you hover over the video with your mouse the 'Download This Video' option immediately pops up as shown in this clip here.

RealPlayer11 is meant to be able to play "all major audio and video formats" - although I have not tested it with the main open source formats yet!

Use Your Computer for Internet TV

When it comes to watching video channels online you have at least two great sites to choose from - Joost and Miro.

Joost Internet TV

Joost claims to have over 15,000 shows to view, with more being added every day. You need to download the player and sign up before you  get started.

Joost also includes some social features and tools within the player, so you can chat while watching your video or view the latest news through a news feeder. The videos can be played on a full screen or re-sized to suit.

Miro Internet TV

Miro is open source and provides 2,500 channels including a huge range of HD content (unlike Joost). In fact, Miro claims to be much better than Joost citing better access, features, content and organisation (comparison).

Download the Miro player and get started straight away. A quick search of Miro revealed over 300 channels tagged with 'education'.

Personally, I like both players and am quite happy to use both of them for different channels.

18/12/08 Update: As of Dec 19th 2008 the Joost software will be discontinued and all movies will be viewable on Joost.

VLC- Media Player for the Future

VLC Media Player

VLC media player is a highly portable, cross-platform multimedia player that supports a large number of audio and video formats (mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4, vorbis, divX, mp3, wmv, wma, avi, ogg, ogm, wav, flv).

VLC can also be used to play DVDs and VCDs. VLC is very useful for playing open standard formats, such as ogg, which many current media players cannot handle.

In addition, VLC can be used to view free streaming television and radio (via Shoutcast TV). There are lots of channels to choose from including a wide range of Christmas stations! To see how the streaming is set up, just watch this video from Jimmyr.
