Easy Photo Sharing with Yogile

Yogile must be the easiest photo sharing website I have come across. Looks like it could be very useful for the classroom.

Your whole class can easily contribute to a single album by uploading from computer, emailing or sending mms via mobile phone. You simply provide the details of your customized URL and/or Yogile e-mail address. Email notification is sent to you when new photos are added.

You can decide to share the Yogile album publicly, for anyone to see, or keep it just for your students. Simply add a password to the album. More than one album can be created so you could have different albums for different classes or different subjects. Resetting the album passwords is quite easy - if you have a new group of students or if you want to restrict access altogether!

When emailing photos, students can add their names to the subject line to identify their contribution. This will become the title of the photo. They could also add content to the main body of the email, which is added to the description of the photo. The album password should also be included in the body of the email.

The contents of the album can be viewed as thumbnails or a slideshow and each individual photo can be downloaded. Yogile provides a useful 100MB of storage.

The best thing of all is that your students do not have to register so the whole process of using Yogile really is "hassle-free".

My thanks to Anthony and Maurice, from Yogile, for the heads up on this one and for their prompt assistance with my queries!

View Flickr Photos in a 3D World

Tag Galaxy - Figure 1

Tag Galaxy provides a lovely visual interface to search for and view photos from Flickr. In this example, I initially searched for 'badminton' and then added 'sports'. This found 1,846 photos!

When you select your initial tag you will be presented with a 'tag galaxy' (see figure 1). You can then refine your search by selecting one of the 'planets'. This produces the 'world', which you can rotate and zoom in/out (see figure 2).

Tag Galaxy - Figure 2

Finally, you can select an image of interest and view it in crisp, clear detail (see figure 3).  The link for the originating Flickr page is also given. Would be perfect if Creative Commons search was added!

Simply beautiful!

Photobucket the One Stop Shop

Photobucket is an image and video hosting site. As well as hosting, Photobucket enables you to edit your images, including red eye fix, automatic fix, crop, rotate, resize, flip and change contrast. For the more adventurous, Photobucket also has a layers feature.

Slideshow creation, in three easy steps, is also available in Photobucket as well as video creation - in just five easy steps! The video creation is really fun with lots of built in features such as text, borders and music to add.

This is a little sample of a video created in Photobucket. Our College staff trip to Denmark this year. Can you identify the town we were in? :-)

Irish Photo Library Website Launched

ImagebankImagebank is a photo library website where people can search for and share high-quality photos for educational use.

The site was launched recently by NCTE and Scoilnet and has been developed in response to teachers’ needs and requests.

Imagebank is intended to be a support resource for students and teachers in Irish education by providing Irish related photos (places and spaces, animals, sport and flowers, etc).

Cat by Max WesthyThe images in Imagebank are made available under Creative Commons licensing and everyone, with an interest in education, is encouraged to add high-quality photographs to the site.

Although geared towards an Irish setting, many of the photographs in Imagebank could easily be used for any educational setting.

Online Goodies (3) - Flickr

Flickr LogoFlickr is definitely the 'mother of all' photo sharing websites with as many as 1,475 photos being uploaded per minute!

Essentially, Flickr allows you to upload and share your photos online. Once uploaded the photos can be easily organised into groups or 'sets' and tagged for easy retrieval. Notes can also be added to various parts of the photo, which can be quite useful for educational purposes.

Unfortunately, Flickr is currently blocked on our educational network which makes it impossible to use in the classroom. We are not alone in this as the following cartoon highlights the case for unblocking social networking sites!

There are, however, many other photo sharing websites available for use until such time as Flickr is allowed. Details and a list can be found on Wikipedia.
