Downloading Videos with RealPlayer

RealPlayer11Downloading videos from the web couldn't be easier with RealPlayer11.

The NEW RealPlayer gives you "the power to download Internet video instantly" by simply grabbing videos from Web sites with just one click.

The downloaded videos are automatically saved to the RealPlayer11 library so that you can easily watch them whenever you want.

RealPlayer 11As you hover over the video with your mouse the 'Download This Video' option immediately pops up as shown in this clip here.

RealPlayer11 is meant to be able to play "all major audio and video formats" - although I have not tested it with the main open source formats yet!

The Visual Dictionary Online

Visual Dictionary Online

The Visual Dictionary Online is "an interactive dictionary with an innovative approach". There are 15 major themes to access with more than 6,000 images and words to view.

The Visual Dictionary Online is designed to help you "find the right word at a glance". Simply click on any word in the diagram to see the corresponding definition.

What I really like about the Visual Dictionary Online is that an audio pronunciation is also included for every word - so really you could think of this site as the 'Audio-Visual Dictionary'!!

A game of the week is also included where you can build your vocabulary or test your knowledge by associating words with images - archived games are also available.

ICT Flash Games Database

ReviseICT Logo

ReviseICT.co.uk is a great place to visit for ICT flash based games. Although aimed at second level students, they are also useful for beginners learning ICT.

ReviseICT.co.uk includes such games as 'penalty shootout', 'walk the plank', 'beat the bomb', 'hoop shoot' and 'fling the teacher'!

Penalty ShootoutIn the 'penalty shootout', when you answer the question correctly, you get a chance to beat the goalkeeper. This provides great motivation to get the question right.

Also, you don't automatically beat the keeper - so this part is a bit of a challenge in itself :-)

Great for competitive types and sports enthusiasts. Some of the games also allow for two player participation.

Each of the revision topics in ReviseICT.co.uk has a collection of "notes, podcasts, mind-maps, games, quizzes and suggested links". As well as this, separate ICT related tutorials are also provided.

All of the flash games are produced using ContentGenerator, which even provides some of the games for free so that you can create your very own!

A great find and just in time for exam revision coming up!! Thanks David.

Create Instructional Videos with Your Mobile

Rashmi’s Mathematics Video

Wondering how to make use of the video function on your mobile phone?

Well, have a look at this great little example of an instructional video created with a Nokia and uploaded to the computer. No expensive equipment or setup needed. Just a bit of inspiration!

Bite size instruction - This could be really useful for students who miss the 'real thing' or need a second look.

Thanks for sharing Rashmi :-)

Convert your HTML to PDF

htm2pdf logo

htm2pdf is an extremely easy tool to use to convert your website/blog pages to pdf format. At htm2pdf, you can either enter the web address or paste in 'unpublished' html code.

What I particularly like about this tool, apart from it being free, is that it has an option to preserve your links and flash content. So, htm2pdf could easily be used to produce interactive pdf documents without having to buy any expensive software! Here is a one page example from the International Edubloggers Directory - with links intact.

I like htm2pdf - thanks for finding this tool Jane!

Neat Reader for Project Gutenberg

Project GutenbergProject Gutenberg is the largest online repository of free eBooks, presently containing over 20,000 titles.

In fact, the stated mission of Project Gutenberg is "to encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks".

You can search the catalog using author, title word/s or etext number. It is also possible to simply browse through the titles or choose one from the latest top 100 downloads.

NetBookThe downloaded eBooks are limited to text, html or audio format and this is where NetBook comes in.

NetBook is an eBook reader/listener for Project Gutenberg, which lets you easily search the database, download and read/listen to the eBooks and store them in cache for offline use.

NetBook also automatically downloads the "new books" and adds them to the catalog list.

Storing and Sharing Your Files Online

Office Live WindowsThere are lots of file sharing sites out there most of which are blocked on our student network, simply because they allow file sharing!

But, I have just come across Office Live Workspace which, so far, remains open and accessible. I like Office Live Workspace because it allows you to upload many file types, including all the OpenOffice documents, as well as the normal Microsoft Office documents. This is a distinct advantage over Google Docs, which only allows for a limited number of file types.

officelive4.gifHandy features in Office Live Workspace include creating folders, called workspaces, and uploading multiple files using simple drag and drop.  The current upload limit is 500 MB for the whole account, with a maximum of 30MB per file.

You can also create specialised workspaces which already contain useful built in applications. For example, the class workspace contains a contact list, date list, class notes, essay outline and syllabus. Handy little features for students to use.

Sharing files/workspaces in Office Live Workspace is easy as you simply select the Share option on the toolbar and then add the e-mail addresses of people whom you'd like to grant read/write access to your document/workspace. Up to 100 people can be added.

NB: To share a single file it must be placed in the 'Documents' workspace.

Sharing the whole workspace or your screen could be good for online collaboration and demonstration.

Now blocked as of beginning of May 2008 :-(
